Why change to ceramic resonators when the good old crystal oscillators still work "okay" ?
The answer is this, compared with those crystals, the latest resonators need no external load capacitors, eliminate tank circuits in third overtone oscillators, suffer less from vibration and shock, have a much faster rise-time (1/102 ), are independent of drive level and save you both money and space. And the circuits do not have to be adjusted on your production lines.
The full range is far too broad to describe fully here, but to whet the appetite, for consumer applications in the 2.00 to 70.00MHz range, operating from –20°C to 80°C there are five case sizes, the smallest being only 1.3x3.2x0.7mm. Initial tolerance is ±0.5%, temperature stability ±0.2% and ten-year ageing ±0.1%.
For the automotive sector working at -40°C to 125°C three versions, in similar case sizes and with much the same performance are joined by the new CSTCV_X_Q. This one device covers the range from 14.70MHz to 70.00MHz, with only the height varying.
Murata is recognized as the industry leader in resonator quality and capacity, as well as the industry leader in research and development. Murata offers some of the world’s smallest resonator packages. New “tight tolerance” resonators recently have been developed for use in USB 2.0 (Low Speed and Full Speed) applications.
