Molex has announced the development and first samples of a new IEEE 1394 Small Multimedia Interface (SMI) Plastic Optical Fiber (POF) connector and transceiver system.

The SMI connector system for POF is suitable for low-cost, high-speed data transmission for applications such as home and industrial networking. This new duplex-style connector system can operate at S200 (250 Mb/s) speeds for up to 50 meters today and S400 (500 Mb/s) in the future.

The system can meet 1394b specification requirements for the additional bandwidth of HDTV, digital audio and real-time applications such as security, all running at the same time. This high-speed interconnect offers low insertion loss for good signal integrity and no electromagnetic interference.
